Leadership Recognition

“Leadership is exemplified by people who are able to impact those around them in a positive way.”

Students

The Jack Donohue Ambassadors act as role models and helpers. This group is comprised of Grade 6-8 students who wish to gain leadership experience by collaborating with their peers as well as mentoring the Grade 1-3 students through play. The Ambassadors lead different activities to engage the younger students, including Let's Play. The Ambassadors usher and set up for assemblies. They also provide tours of the school to new students. The Ambassadors celebrate diversity and the multicultural school community.

Our Students’ Council takes on many initiatives throughout the year to provide activities for all students, and to reach out to other schools within our district, our community and the world community through activities and charities.

We have many amazing students who demonstrate their leadership on Student Council, on sports fields, in our musical and arts productions, and within our classrooms.

Staff

The staff at Jack Donohue is committed to life-long learning. Many members of the staff are presently involved in a variety of professional growth activities. Examples of these activities include completing professional qualification courses, as well as planning and attending board-wide professional development activities in literacy, numeracy and technology. We recognize and encourage these positive leadership initiatives by providing and supporting opportunities for further professional growth. We also recognize staff leadership through regular interactions, letters of thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, performance appraisals and our Principal report to School Council.

We are in the fifth year of a special initiative to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and those students who benefit from kinesthetic activities. This is an innovative approach that combines many successful strategies and relies heavily on the leadership of our Special Education team, led by a Learning Support Teacher and our our Educational Assistants.

Many of our staff members demonstrate their leadership within our school setting, serving as team leaders, leading arts and sports activities, and coordinating the great number of extra-curricular activities that we offer to our students. There are staff members trained in First Aid and in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. Many of our teachers mentor new teachers and student teachers. Our custodial and support staff members are always bringing new ideas to our school.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Our parents, guardians and volunteers are an integral part of the Jack Donohue school community. Our volunteers can be found taking part in and contributing to all aspects of life at Jack Donohue P.S. In addition to our dedicated School Council members (who do everything from organizing fundraising activities to providing valuable input on issues at a district-wide level), our volunteers can be found participating in countless activities, including Primary reading programs, accompanying classes on field trips, helping with Language and Mathematics, and cheering our students on at athletic and academic events. Jack Donohue P.S. acknowledges and thanks the wonderful contributions of our volunteers.

Community

We recognize our community partners through our school newsletters, school web site, principal’s report to School Council and with Thank You cards. Many of our school initiatives are developed in conjunction with our school community. Together, these partnerships are invaluable to the success of our school and we continue to foster our community relations each year. Some of our community partners include the Ottawa Fire Department, our School Resource Officer, our Public Health Nurse, the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, and many more.
